"Fracture Clinic (again)"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I have a broken ankle and on the last visit I waited 2.5 hours for an appointment that I arrived in good time for (same on my first visit). On seeing the consultant, they tried to lecture me about keeping my foot above my heart to keep the swelling down, that did not go well for them. On arrival at the clinic I had no swelling, it was the 2.5 hour wait that caused the damage. They re-plastered me swelling and all and now the swelling is down again my plaster is so loose it does not support my break any longer. I basically came home from the hospital in far worse condition than when I arrived.

The care in this clinic is shoddy and "Devil May Care", and it is simply not acceptable for the hospital to continue to do nothing about it. On talking to other people, this clinic has been like this for many years. Rubbish! It's an utter disgrace.

Response from Andrew Heath, Lead in Patient Experience & Engagement, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you so much for sharing your story about our fracture clinic. I was disappointed to read about the delay you experienced waiting for your appointment with the consultant and how you feel this delay aggravated the swelling of your broken ankle. I know that there is very little that can be done now to change your personal experience; however I will pass your comments on to the clinic who treated you so they can improve their service moving forward.

I would also be grateful if you could contact a member of my team directly on 01253 955588 so that we can get further details about what happened and ensure we learn from this incident. I do assure you this will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Or if you would like to share your experience in confidence with an independent organisation please contact Healthwatch Blackpool on 0300 323 2100.

Thank you once again for leaving feedback and taking the time to comment on your treatment at the fracture clinic.

Kind Regards

Andrew Heath
