"Communication and asessment skills ..."
About: Wansbeck Hospital Wansbeck Hospital Ashington NE63 9JJ
What could be improved
Communication and asessment skills poor on Ward 5. Staff lacked empathy and interest in client care and meeting the basic needs of patients e.g the right to have fluids. Other patients commented how they helped our mam return to her bed etc during the night as no staff were around.
My mam died suddenly from hospital aquired pneumonia following an emergency hernia operation. The operation itself was deemed a success and my mam was due to return home three days later. At visiting our mam was found to be struggling to breathe and severley dehydrated. There were a lack of vomit bowls and it seems likely that some of my mams vomit had been aspirated onto her lungs. She died within 72 hours of admission, by the time the hospital eventually diagnosed her condition it was too late and she died 12 hours later in intensive care. We have senior qualified medical staff in the family who witnessed the lack of basic care and had to push nursing staff to carry out basic observations. She died suddenly in intensive care looking scared and unable to say goodbye to her much loved family.
