"A long wait and no food for a 4 year old with a broken arm at BRI"

About: Bristol Royal Hospital For Children / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

My 4 year old son fell off the slide in a local park in Bristol and broke is arm badly on 21st of August. This happened around 4pm my wife called the ambulance and phoned me at the same time to come to the Children's Hospital Emergency dept. I went there they were still not there as the ambulance did not turn up even after half an hour, so she took a lift to come to the hospital. Ambulance rang our mobile after an hour that they were still too busy and couldnt come.

Our son was seen by the emergency dept and sent to the ward 36. Where they said that he would be operated later in the night or next morning. Next morning they said that theatre was too busy as there were other serious emergencies and there was only one theatre running so they did not know when could they slot him in. We were shifted to ward 33. Next day we waited all day, they kept him hungry again but at the end still theatre was busy. One doctor came late in the night and promised that our son would be first on the list tomorrow. We waited all day kept the little boy hungry and found out that he was not booked in for theatre. They kept promising and ultimately they did the procedure next day later in the afternoon.

I just wonder that if they get two life threatening emergencies at one time would they let one wait!.

This hospital covers whole of southwest for serious emergencies and there is only one thatre working. This very precarious situation.
