"Absolutely shocked"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I am absolutely disgusted what I have seen yesterday (19/07/2016) at A&E. Obliviously we know there are long waits (over 9 hrs ) but to examine a young girl in her underwear in the waiting room in front of a packed waiting room is beyond shocking. Another patient was examined by the vending machines, in front of everyone. . There were old people in corridors that were begging for help to go to the toilet and were told to wait. The old man ended up going to the toilet in his trolley in the middle of the obs area in front of everyone, after having the nurse berate him because he needed the toilet. What dignity is that?

Old people who had been on trolleys for over 9 hrs and weren't even offered water. One of the most disgusting things I saw was a conversation with a senior nurse who told another nurse "don't bother doing bloods, he looks fine" even though the patient was assaulted, had a head injury and passed out.

I have to admit the dr my dad saw was amazing and respectful but he was the only one that was.

Response from Andrew Heath, Lead in Patient Experience & Engagement, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

I am truly sorry to read about your experience of our Emergency Department(A&E) yesterday. The department is under severe pressure due to the number of patients it is currently seeing and delivering optimum care in these circumstances is challenging.

Staff in the department are prioritising patients to ensure those who need urgent care are treated quickly, which means that those with less serious conditions or minor ailments often have to wait longer than we would want them to.

So that long waits can be avoided we continue to advise people to consider alternatives before attending the Emergency Department(A&E) if their condition or injury is not an emergency. These alternatives include but are not limited to:

Visting their GP Practice

Telephoning NHS 111,

Local pharmacy

The Local GP Walk in Centres

I am disappointed to hear about what you witnessed yesterday. This is not the standard we would expect. I can assure you we have taken your comments extremely seriously and these concerns are presently being reviewed by the Trusts senior management team to consider what actions need to be taken immediately and going forward. I would be grateful if you could also contact a member of my team directly on 01253 955588 so that we can ensure we learn from this instance. I do assure you this will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Heath
