"Treatment for torn retinas"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford)

I attended the Rotary Ward emergency eye clinic on 20June. I was seen by the duty consultant who gave my eyes a very thorough examination. They were extremely careful and at no time did I feel unhappy or uncomfortable. They referred me to the opthamology department for further review and possible treatment. The admin system then failed to arrange an appointment for me as the relevant secretary was on holiday! After the resultant unnecessary delay, I subsequently attended the eye clinic at WHH.

Although the staff and arrangements were fine, I found that the actual treatment I received from the VR surgeon was extremely unpleasant. I have had 5 similar examinations including laser treatment but on this occasion, the examination and treatment was so painful, I had to withdraw before it was finished. Now I am trying to find an alternative surgeon. Eyes and the surrounding tissue are highly sensitive and need highly sensitive treatment. This surgeon needs some further training.

I am so sorry that after a good start, your treatment for your condition was so disappointing - and so painful.

We need to look into this for you - as you say there may be some training needs - and we need to take more details from you.

Please will you contact PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) on 01227 783145 or 01227 864314 or by email at ekh-tr.PALS@nhs.net so that we can take this forward.
