"On the whole, good"

About: Guy's Hospital

I attended for an operation and cannot fault the surgical team and the care received afterwards in the ward. My one worry was an apparent lack of compassion shown by the anaesthetist and the 2 people with them. Before being "put under" a mask was clamped so tightly on my face, with no explanation as to what it was. I managed to ask (it was oxygen) and said the hand pressure on the mask was hurting my eye. I was told it had to be tight, but surely not that tight? Then then the breathing tube that was to be inserted was waved around and talked about by the people present before I was unconscious. The only "nice" thing that happened was someone saying you will feel sleepy soon.

However, all the other staff encountered were lovely, apart from a person with the tea trolley who was rude and, it seemed, deliberately difficult.

Thank you for taking the time to share you feedback with us. We are pleased to hear that the operation went well and your ward care was of a high standard but we are concerned about your experience with the anaesthetic team. We would like to apologise that the pressure exerted on the mask hurt your eye and this was not explained to you beforehand. We are sorry to hear that the staff spoke about the breathing tube to be used in front of you as if you were not there. We would like to understand more about this. If you would like to contact out PALS Team they can liaise with the department so that we can look into this further. Our PALS (patient advice and liaison service) team can be contacted by telephone 020 7188 8801 or email pals@gstt.nhs.uk
