What I liked

Majority of hosp staff were friendly,

cleanliness throughout hospital.

What could be improved

I have previously been a patient in 2005, admitted to the old AAU, ( i fail to now remember the new name) However on my recent admission i was transferred to ACUB in the tower block, which i have to say in comparison is very unorganised and appeared to lack leadership, or maybe just understaffed. I am a Nurse myself, and work within the trust, however i was left suddenly feeling very vulnerable, a strange feeling as i know the hospital. As i arrived on the ward a nurse was administering medications to a patient. The patient asked what the medication was for, the nurse replied abruptly that the Dr wants them to have it and turned and walked out. Obviously if i was well i would have informed the ward manager so something could have been done about this kind of treatment but, being an observer of the busy ward environment completely took me back, and the feeling of not wanting to be a trouble maker crept in. Patients were not spoken to with kindness and i felt ashamed. I was later transferred to the 5th floor where i was an inpatient for 9 days, awaiting surgery which to say the least was fairly distressing. However my operation was planned each day but as i was still on the emergency list is unavoidable. The Scott team and Hewin team were very good, although the communication between nursing and medical staff is sometimes lacking. The nursing team did not know when i was NBM, and i was told on one occasion ' well if you want to be NBM then that's up to you ' despite the medical team telling me to be. As a nurse i felt like i should have done something about this behaviour as all of the staff on the ward were actually excellent and only a couple of staff that lacked any compassion, but found myself in tears instead. My post op care was slightly traumatic too as analgesia was not effective.

Anything else?

Although i have just written some of the negative experiences, overall i think GRH's staff work extremely well, and most of the problems possibly come down to lack of time. It was a massive eye opener to see how the wards are from a patient's bed and know that i will always speak up against bad practice in future. But is hard to do so when feeling so poorly.

The domestic staff on the 5th floor were a credit, every single day our beds got wheeled to one side of the room to the other so the areas could be properly cleaned.
