"Thanks for caring for my Granddad"

About: Lister Hospital

My granddad was the strongest person i know. my granddad spent 9 weeks in barley ward recovering from a stroke. Unfortunately the route cause of the stroke was incurable for a man in his condition. My granddad approached each and every day with conviction to get better and the staff on Barley ward saw that and bonds were formed. 9 weeks is a long time but bearable when he was surrounded by family and the new friends he/we made. My Nan was treated like a queen as she went through the final stages in her 59 years of marriage (so nearly 60). No task was to big or small for every colleague in Barley ward making me and my family very welcome. every member of staff that came to visit my granddad's bed brought a smile to his face. His smile would then beam through all of his family present also. I am so lucky to have an incredibly close family that my wonderful granddad and nan created and nurtured. However in these circumstances there are times you find yourself feeling alone and scared but the barley ward staff showed care and compassion for my granddad that made all those feelings go away. i will not forget my granddad. I will also not forget the people of Barley ward and what they did. whether it be getting me a drink when all I asked was where to get one or helping my granddad feel slightly more relaxed. all 9 weeks there was hope he would leave the hospital and return home with us and his passing hit so hard to his family and the staff on Barley ward. I want to thank everyone again from the Barley ward for taking care of my granddad and my family when I couldn't. I also want to say a special thank you to an angel. towards the very end i struggled. i could not leave my granddad of an evening until i knew he had settled and was not confused or scared. partly so i could sleep and mainly so i could return to Nan and reassure her. in my attempts to stay with my granddad until he would fall asleep i found myself lonely and scared. i was an emotional state but it was something i needed to do so i could sleep at night. One member of staff kept me company as they tended to my granddad. They talked to me and comforted me when i needed it. Every time i saw their face as they were caring for my granddad or heard the way they spoke would make me cry because it melted my heart to see someone caring for him as much as we did. This member of staff told me every night that they would look after my granddad for our family after i left. This allowed me to return home to actually get some sleep or at least pass on this reassurance to my Nan. without this member of staff, i don't think i could have got through this final week. Thank you. This is my story and my family will all have similar stories about other members of staff as they were all fantastic. I will miss this person and the other incredible people who have cared for my granddad. I want to say thank you from our family, Thank you on behalf of Les Clarke and another personal thank you from myself Mike.

We were very sad to ready about your grandfather's death, but heartened equally by what great care he (and the rest of your family) received at the hands of our stroke specialist team colleagues on Barley ward here at the Lister.

We've passed your really kind words on to them - we know that they will be so pleased to read your feedback.

It sounds like your grandfather was a really special man and he will be missed hugely by all who knew him. Please do accept our deepest condolences and best wishes for the future.
