"Wishaw general main entrance"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as a parent/guardian),

Wish to raise a concern over the smoking policy at Wishaw general. Me and my wife have been attending the maternity wing for different reasons scan etc and each time we visit we need to cut our way thru the many people smoking at the entrance. You can even smell the smoke inside the foyer. I see the hospital has spent a lot of money on signage only for smokers to sit underneath the sign and smoke. Most disturbing thing is I had to take my new born home and her first gasps of the outside world is secondhand cigarette smoke. You must put some enforcement into action. If your going to have a policy don't just spend a fortune with a sign company and hope for the best. NO SMOKING MEANS NO SMOKING. PLEASE ENFORCE. You have new babies leaving your hospital.

Dear Ridgid258

I am sorry to hear about your experience of leaving Wishaw General Hospital as a family with your new daughter and that her first encounter with the outside world was smoke.

NHS Lanarkshire takes this seriously and in addition to the signs you mentioned There has been and continues to be communication of the No Smoking Policy amongst staff, patients and visitors in order to improve compliance.

Those breeching the policy are in the minority, however it has been recognised by Scottish parliament that without legislation it is difficult for hospital staff to enforce. At the present time Scottish Parliament are considering the proposal to make it an offence and enforceable.

Thank you for sharing this experience and I do understand your frustration. Your feedback helps raise awareness with the public which we hope will help us to change peoples attitude and behaviour of smoking in hospital grounds.

I hope your daughter is doing well

Kind Regards

Lyn
