"Early Pregnancy Unit - Thank You"

About: Wexham Park Hospital

EPU Thank you

I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage about a month ago and as the nature did not want to take its course I decided to go through the ERPC procedure.

It has been a hard time for my husband and I, as it was going to be our first, long awaited baby (10 years of trying and various infertility treatments) and despite our and our Consultant’s efforts (3 scans in the past month) there was nothing we or they could do to change it.

A day before the surgery I started to bleed heavily with unbearable cramps and let the consulting doctor know. They called me almost immediately and made sure that a scan was organised the next morning before the ERPC to ensure that the right course of action was taken. The surgery was scheduled to 8:00 am and the scan was going to be performed before it, which meant that one of the doctors had to come to work earlier that morning just to do the scan in order to help me. Needless to say I was a bit nervous and worried as I was not sure what to expect having never had any surgery or miscarriage before.

From the moment I arrived in hospital I have been under the care of four absolutely wonderful, professional and caring doctors - doctor on duty who admitted me in and patiently took all of my history and performed all checks, doctor who scanned me in their own private time before their shift began, anaesthetist thanks to whom it was an extremely peaceful and pain free experience, registrar performing the surgery that resulted in no complications and all throughout the Consultant who came to see me in the recovery room and check that I was alright despite the fact they didn’t have to.

As if it were not enough all throughout the surgery journey I have been looked after by four various nurses before, during and after the surgery with utmost professionalism, efficiency and most of all care. Two of the nurses were with me all along in the recovery room and checked my temperature and blood pressure every 15 minutes for about 1.5 hours and made sure the painkiller was provided about 5 seconds from the moment i mentioned there was some pain. They also helped me get dressed, made sure I made it safely to where my husband was waiting and massaged my hand so that it didn’t bruise following the cannula removal. I felt as if I was part of their family rather than a patient being looked after in a Day Surgery Unit.

I would like to thank the whole team for all their amazing efforts and the human touch. You have made that horrible time in our lives that much better. I wish you all the very best.
