About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

Late during the night my husband and I were arriving to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. We were both nervous and excited, half expecting to get sent home again as labour hadn't been going very long. How wrong we were. 8cm already and a wonderful student midwife was looking after me but she couldn't find a heartbeat but my baby was only hiding, I could feel her move. A lovely surgical team introduced themselves just to check in hoping that we wouldn't meet again. But my baby got stuck back to back two hours later. Her heartbeat dropped. I was rushed to theatre and my little bundle was brought safely into the world. I never once felt scared, the staff were fantastic and helped me stay calm and made sure I knew what was happening. The midwives, the surgeons, the anaesthetist, they had my back. They took care of it. I can't thank them enough. Post care, from the ward assistants showing me how to bathe my baby and the domestics saying Hi, to the midwives and paediatricians making sure all was OK. They made me want to do it all again. Fantastic people doing a wonderful job!

Dear Purvette

Your story would bring a tear to the eye of even the most long in the tooth NHS professional, it certainly did to me! Your story is also very reassuring for expectant mums. Even when things go wrong we do our best to make it right.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

The teamwork you describe, the professionalism and the little acts of kindness are what makes for a good experience. The fact that you were able to stay calm throughout is remarkable and staff will be delighted that they were able to create that atmosphere for you.

In the NHS, everyone matters so we are very grateful to you for mentioning all the various staff groups who contributed to your care. You describe them as fantastic. They will feel even more fantastic reading this!

Many thanks again for your post.

Kind regards,
