On Tuesday 21 June I was quite ill with a bladder infection and had, unwisely, travelled down from

Leeds to Abbotsbury so my sister-in-law could have her one and only annual holiday.

Having given a urine sample in Leeds on the previous Friday I phoned to ask the result so a pharmacist in Weymouth could dispense some medication.

The Leeds surgery said they had not received the result and could do nothing about it.

The result might arrive on the Wednesday.

Because I was quite ill I was advised to attend the GP Walk In Centre at Weymouth.

The excellent receptionist found my details on the new super computer system and suggested I provide a sample ready for the doctor.

Within a few minutes I saw the doctor and who confirmed that I still had the infection. They prescribed an antibiotic and said if I was no better the next day I ought to return.

Within 30 minutes they phoned my mobile and said they had been in touch with the surgery in Leeds, obtained the number of the lab where my Friday sample had been sent and, phoned the lab to obtain the result.

They confirmed that the antibiotic they had prescribed was the correct one.

I was so relieved and grateful for all that they had done.

They had no need to go the extra mile but did.

I continued with the antibiotics and the following Tuesday attended my local surgery and the infection had gone.

Both the receptionist and the doctor deserve the highest praise for their work particularly when compared to the Leeds surgery.
