"Nurses worked hard. Food was OK"

About: York Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Nurses worked hard. Food was OK

What could be improved

See the 'Anything else' bit below:

Anything else?

The ward was filthy. The cleaner was lazy and disinterested in his 'work'. Nurses worked hard but were massively understaffed. However, many were 'ritualistic' in attitudes - ie "we do it this way because we've always done it this way". doctors told me what was going to happen to me without asking my opinion. I witnessed patients hurried into consenting to procedures they clearly didn't understand. Patients in pain were told they'd have to 'wait until the drug round', rather than having their current prescribed analgesia & it's effectiveness reviewed. Patients who needed help with feeding were left alone looking at a plate of food - which was eventually removed - without the patient being fed. (I, as a patient had to help feed another patient to prevent them going hungry. NOT acceptable in this day and age).
