"Patient's 15 step challenge"

Southwell Day Centre organised a small group of Learning Disability and Mental Health patients to conduct the 15 Step Challenge, within Brampton’s new Health Centre.

This involved the patients walking around the area, making notes in relation to whether the area was: -

• Welcoming

• Safe

• Caring and involving

• Well organised and calm.

The challenge was taken seriously by the patients, and they came up with many constructive suggestions, and a few criticisms. This in turn was fed back to the area Manager, and the Quality Improvement Lead for the hospital. Patients are looking forward to seeing if any of their suggestions are implemented.

The feedback we received from the patients having conducted the 15 step challenge was extremely positive and rewarding, and they have asked to be considered for other such challenges in the future.

Many thanks to the patients who were invovled in completing the 15 step challenge which has been really informative for the health centre, who have responded positively in terms of how they will move forward with the suggestions.

Not only has this activity demonstrated the value of the 15 steps challenge as an exercise but will also promote patient involvement within the Directorate.


We will be looking for more volunteers to conduct a 15 steps challenge in other areas. Many thanks to the staff in Southwell for organising this.

I will keep patients posted on the changes that have been made.
