About: Sunderland Eye Infirmary

I took my Mum for her first appointment at the glaucoma clinic. She has advanced glaucoma and had been referred by another hospital ophthalmology department which she has attended since first being diagnosed nearly 20 years ago. The difference between the two hospitals in how she was treated, both as a patient and a person, was amazing. The Registrar seemed to have all the time in the world for her, took a thorough history and made sure that all the necessary tests were carried out. She then called upon the Consultant to give his opinion. He explained everything in detail in a kind and caring way and although the treatment options are very limited at this stage for Mum, she felt listened to, respected and that both doctors had her best interests at heart. I just wish that Mum could have been seen here sooner. I should like to thank the doctors concerned and all of the other staff with whom we came into contact. Without exception, this was an example of the NHS at its very best.
