"Liverpool city centre Walk in Centre midiagnosis"

About: Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I work in a busy store and got a very painful rash on my arm. I am lucky to work in a pharmacy and the pharmacist took one look at the rash and told me it was shingles. The pain associated with it was horrible, and she told me to go to the walk in centre. I couldn't work as the pain was so bad so I went straight to the walk in centre and, after a 2 hour wait, a triage nurse who came across as very unprofessional, told me it's nothing and not worth seeing anybody else about. I insisted and so the nurse brought in another obviously annoyed nurse. They also didn't seem bothered by it at all, like I was wasting their time, and said it was a sweat rash and not worthy of prescribing anything.

I went back to work and because it had been "diagnosed" as a sweat rash, my boss couldn't send me home. It was horrible and I was in so much pain I made an appointment with my doctor. My doctor was horrified with the service I had received. They said of course it was shingles and gave me a prescription straight away. When I told my Dr that 2 nurses at the Liverpool city centre walk in said it was just a sweat rash they was fuming and said they get it wrong all the time.

I think my pharmacist knew more than the nurses working at this walk in and this isn't the first time things like this have happened. I think either the training needs to be vastly improved, the attitudes need to change, or more staffing needs to happen as these people may simply have too many people to serve, they vent their anger on minor conditions. They definitely didn't help me. If anything it worsened my condition.

Hi Patient M,

I am really sorry for the distress that this has caused but unfortunately we have been unable to identify the staff involved with the detail that we currently have. I would really like to investigate your concerns properly as what you describe falls well below the standards we would expect. Could you contact me directly with your name and some further details so that I can look into it? My number is 0151 295 3936, email Kate.jones@liverpoolch.nhs.uk

Many Thanks

Kate Jones
