"Nothing"

About: Kettering General Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Nothing

What could be improved

I have been a health care professional for 20 years and i have never experienced such a Hospital that treats patient and family the way Kettering General does. Nurses are rude, care nothing for the patients or their family's. Nurse's lack skill and knowledge in their area or expertise. Management need to do a better job with the nurses within the hospital. When asked about my Mothers condition, the nurse could only tell him that it was something that started with the P word. PROTEIN is the word.

Just because a patient is elderly does not mean they do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else, and the best care.

Anything else?

Your physicians seem to have no idea what they are doing or how to treat a patient with Diverticulosis. They do not make sure that the infection is completely gone and not spread to any areas of the body. Not one Physician had a clue as to what was going on with my Mother, did not know any thing about her disease or what education and treatment was needed.

Medical history. The doctor should of asked about your health and symptoms such as pain. Asked about your bowel habits, diet, and any medications you take.

Blood test. This test can help detect infections.

It was stated that blood work showed nothing. Impossible!

Stool sample. This test may show bleeding in the digestive tract.

Was a stool culture performed? No it was not.

My Brother noticed red in her stool. Did the Hospital?

Digital rectal exam. Insert a gloved finger into your rectum to check for pain, bleeding, or a blockage. Was this done?

X ray and barium enema. Insert liquid called barium in the large intestine through your anus. The anus is the opening where stool leaves the body. The barium makes the diverticula show up on an x ray.

This test was suppose to be done and was not. Why?

Colonoscopy. Insert a small tube through your anus. A tiny video camera is in the tube and will show if there are any pouches.

Three times they tried to perform this test and failed. My Mother was screaming in pain.

Not one Physician even suggested any further testing or recommendations. Because she is old i guess it would be such a waste or time and money to think about it.

We were saddened to have received your comments about your mother’s care and apologise for any distress this has caused. We take complaints very seriously and use them and any lessons learned to improve our services.

We are working hard to ensure that all staff understand the importance of communicating well with our patients and whilst this may not have been your experience of the hospital I must stress that we are striving to improve.

I understand the experience must have been frightening for your mother and I apologise on behalf of the Trust. We pride ourselves on providing a high standard of care, which is informative and respectful to all our patients.

You have very specific clinical questions relating to your mothers care and we would like the opportunity to review these together with you. Could I ask you to contact our Quality and Patient Safety Facilitator Jo Bowers on 01536 491519

Please accept my sincere apologies that the standard of care your mother received fell short of what you expected. I thank you for bringing these issues to my attention and taking the time to comment on your experience via NHS choices.

Jo Sharp

Head of Nursing - Medicine
