"Patient misinformed and mislead"

About: Princess of Wales Hospital

Last Wednesday evening had an accident whilst bellringing and hurt my finger very badly. 1st thing on Thursday morning 16/06 I attended the Princess of Wales Minor Injury Unit in Ely. My finger was x-rayed and I was informed that I have a complicated break just above the 2nd knuckle. I could see in the x-rays myself that the bones are not aligned and also I can see that my finger is not straight.

I was informed that my x-rays would be forwarded to the orthopaedic department of Addenbrooks for review in the virtual clinic for treatment assessment. I was informed that Addenbrooks would call me back after the clinic. No attempt was made to re-align or straighten my finger, it was not bandaged, strapped or splinted. I was given a very loose elastic bandage and sent on my way.

This morning, 20/06 I called the Princess of Wales Minor Injury Unit as I have not received a call from Addenbrooks. I was told they would chase it up and then they called me back 10 minutes later to inform me that Addenbrooks orthopaedic department would call me back today.

At 4:50pm today I called Addenbrooks orthopaedic department because I had not received a call from them. I was informed that they tried to review my case in clinic today however they could not do so because they have not received my x- rays from the Princess of Wales Minor Injury Unit! They informed me that these would have to be chased up and then they can be reviewed this coming Wednesday before treatment can be suggested.

This will mean a full week will have passed since I sustained my injury, during which time no treatment has been advised or provided. My finger is extremely painful, is numb on the end and nobody at the NHS seems to have any interest in addressing the injury.

When I asked if it will be quicker for me just to attend A&E at Addenbrooks 1st thing tomorrow morning and get re X-rayed, I was told "yes, that is probably best"

So in summary, the NHS have wasted a week of my time. This is completely unaccaptable!

Dear Mr Morgan

I was very sorry to read about your experience of using the Minor Injury Unit and X-Ray Department based at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely.

I would like to pass your comments onto the manager who looks after the MiU and ask them to provide an explanation, but will need a few more details.

Would you be able to get in touch as soon as it's convenient.
