"Poor Nursing in A&E"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My 86 year old Mother had a fall at home and was taken by ambulance to Treliske A&E.

After XRay she was moved into 'Majors 1' though her condition was not considered serious. This resulted in us being virtually ignored for hours as clearly there were priority cases all around.

My Mother is rather frail and has difficulty walking and that was before her fall so when, after a couple of hours, she needed the loo I had to try to find someone to get a nurse to help her.

A nurse came and after I explained the situation she went off and came back with a bedpan, which she simply handed over to my mother. I think it should have been obvious to anyone, especially a nurse, that a frail, elderly lady with an arm in a sling, would not be able to manage such a procedure unaided.

Even then, when this was pointed out, she did not think to close the curtains until my Mother protested.

I'm sure the staff are dreadfully overworked but this was all such basic nursing that I do wonder at the standards being accepted to meet demands.

Dear Laura,

Thank you for your response, I would be grateful if you would pass my comments on to the Matron in charge and I am more than willing to talk to her if that would be helpful but I'm sure if she knows her staff she must already be aware that there are problems.

Best wishes
