About: NHS Ayrshire & Arran / South West Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as the patient),

Arrived at breast screening for a scheduled appointment on Friday to be asked if I minded rescheduling due to illness in the department. I refused to comply as I had to rearrange other commitments to be there. 

I was then very shocked to hear that due to a new computer programme I would not receive my results for at least a month. This delay seems concerning and would like to be assured that if any abnormality was found that I would be notified promptly.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear JeanSM,

Unplanned sick leave left us very short in the department on Friday and women were being asked if they could re-schedule.

I apologise for this delay to you and all those affected. We do alert women that things are slower than normal at present. I am glad that we were able to accommodate you in this instance, particularly as you had made special arrangement to attend.

The introduction of a new Scottish Breast Screening computer system has slowed down the reporting process as the staff are becoming familiar with a completely new film reading process

Instead of the normal 15 working day turnaround we are currently at about 20 days from screening to results.

All films taken on a specific day are reported in a batch. There is unfortunately no method of fast-tracking or prioritising any individual case.

We are working hard to catch up with the backlog and hope that the 15 day target will be achieved again soon.
