"Ward 15"

About: Leeds General Infirmary

My Dad has recently been transferred to this service from St James.

1 His was transferred at 1.30 Sunday morning to ward 15

2 The ward did not know he needed an air mattress and were not treating his pressure sores, yet St James were as were the district nursing team before that.

3 On the first two visits I made to him on Mon and Tues he did not have his call bell within reach.

4 He was soiled in the bed and had not been checked on Monday before I arrived

5 The ward were unable to cut his very long finger nails or clean them and they had excrement under them, I had to do this for him in the end.

6 On the first two occasions I visited him (Mon and Tues)he had not been shaved.

7 He was told by the ward staff he had to wear PJ bottoms in bed and rather than put on his pair they issues him with a hospital pair which were unsuitable for his needs. His are shorts, which are soft and stretchy which makes it easier for him to urinate into a bottle.

8 My father has Personal assistants who work with on a daily basis even after gaining authorization for them to visit from the ward sister the other staff have been difficult about this.

9 On four occasions I have found loose medication either on my dads bedside table he hasn't take or today on the floor where someone has dropped a tablet and not retrieved it.

My father has capacity, but is disabled from a stroke and is hard of hearing. Sometimes (a lot of time recently) he finds it difficult to communicate his thoughts as he cannot remember the correct words. He is 82 years old

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I am very sorry to read that your father had such a distressing time whilst in our care; the level of service that you have described is not what we wish to offer.

I have passed your comments onto the Matron and Head of Nursing for ward 15 so that they can address the issues that you have raised.

It would be very beneficial for our services and for future patients if you could discuss the matters you have raised further with our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS). This would also allow us look into the matters you have raised more thoroughly.

Please call our Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net
