"Overnight stay with 5 week old baby"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

Had to stay here overnight with my 5 week old son who was taken in with a tempreture of 38.8 and was tachicardic. After hearing so many good things i was suprised to be spoken and treated like i was wasting peoples time (one nurse in particular who seemed to rub off on the rest). The nurse came on shift with a bad attitude. After being awake since 2am with a screaming baby i managed to get a nap at 3pm only for the nurse to come in and demand i fold away the day bed as its only for use at night (this was in our own room not a shared ward). Because im not confrontational i got off the bed from my sleep and sat in the chair. I managed to have a good cry when my husband came but i cant imagine how mothers with less suppport would cope in such an eviroment. The atmosphere was tense and uncomfortable, zero communication from staff not even a smile. The same nurse told the cook nt to probide me with food as they felt that i bottle fed more than breast so i didnt need to eat, no one asked me anything.

My son was discontinued from one antibiotic which no one told me until i was chasing them up for his next dose. When ever i asked a question i was met with hostility to a point i just waited for my husband to come to ask on my behalf as i was building up alot of anxiety.

On a plus side the place was clean enough, student nurses were stars who went above and beyond, agency HCA spoke to me and calmed my nerves and doctors who cared for my son explained things clearly when asked.

Dear Shamim

We were very concerned to read about your experiences at Darent Valley Hospital. Please would you be kind enough to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALs) on 01322 428383 or email pals@dvh.nhs.uk so we can investigate further.

Thank you.
