"Smoking on hospital grounds"

I was recently an in-patient at St James hospital, Leeds on Bexley wing. I have had many stays there in the past year so my recent experience is not a one-off.

Despite designated smoking shelters outside entrances to Bexley (and other) wings both patients and visitors insist in standing right in the doorway and lighting up. You have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get into the building.

Last Sunday morning I was allowed out of isolation for the first time in 8 days. Thought I'd go and get some fresh air. When I came out the lift into the foyer there was a patient actually standing inside the building smoking, not a security guard in sight. She quickly put it out when she saw me coming, but I could definitely smell it.

I have complained to the reception staff previously, only to be told there is nothing they can do about it. I have also witnessed verbal a oust of others who have dared to comment to smokers asking them to move away and smoke where they should light up.

I think this is ridiculous - this is an Oncology wing. Why should we have to put up with this?
