"Ultrasound and Gynaecology department"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Gynaecology (Ward 13)

(as the patient),

I recently had an ultrasound for an Ovarian Cyst and a follow up visit to the Gynaecology department. All staff are very friendly and professional. I'm due to have surgery at Wishaw in July to remove the cyst and possibly the ovary and although I'm nervous I'm comfortable with the level of care I have received to date at Wishaw.

Dear Angiza,

Many thanks for taking the time to post your comments about your visit to the gynaecology department. I am delighted to hear that you feel reassured about your care to date. The staff will do their upmost to allevaite any anxieties that you may have and I will share your feedback with them. I hope that your future surgery goes well,

Please dont hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything at that time,

Best Wishes

Update posted by Angiza (the patient)

Thank you Maureen. As the day of surgery approaches, I'm getting more nervous. I spoke to the Consultants secretary yesterday to double check the length of my stay and she was friendly, polite and as helpful as she could be.

Update posted by Angiza (the patient)

My surgery has now been done and most of my experience was positive. The nursing and surgical team were all brilliant. The only complaint I have is about the quality of the meals on offer. I have a gluten sensitivity so avoid all items containing gluten. When I came out of surgery there was nothing available for me to eat and if I hadn't thought ahead and brought some fruit from home I wouldn't have been able to have anything until dinner time. Dinner had to be ordered for me as nothing was sent up with the other patients meals and when it arrived it was barely edible, mince the texture of sand huge mountains of tasteless lumpy potato and overcooked cold green beans. I managed to eat about 10 mouthfuls. Breakfast wasn't much better, for an institution supposedly wanting to encourage healthy eating practices there is a lot to change. I was offered a white roll with jam and butter or rice Krispys for breakfast, I pointed out my gluten sensitivity and they then split another gluten sensitive ladies scrambled eggs in half, even though I told them not to worry as I had brought an apple with me and would be happy to eat that for breakfast. I didn't eat the eggs as for some reason they smelled like dirty feet and were very unappetising.

Dear Angiza,

I am so sorry to hear that your otherwise positive experience with NHS Lanarkshire services was compromised by a breakdown in the meal ordering system. Within the hospital there is a process to alert the dietetic service when patients require a therapeutic meal. Although you may not require to see a dietitian during your stay, your requirements are recorded on our system and appropriate menu card provided to you as well as ordering any additional products you may need.

During your stay this process appears to have failed and I apologise for this. We will reinforce the process with ward staff to ensure that in the future other patients do not share your frustrations
