"Inconsiderate staff"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

During a recent stay in ward 502 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, a staff member who was on night shift didn't really seem to care when I buzzed for more pain killers at 0145 in the morning and took at least 45 minutes to get them - after having a major operation I was in agony- or didn't really care when I was sick and that I needed another bowl.  They just wondered off and got someone else to clean it up. I also couldn't sleep when it was so hot in that room so I asked if they could open the window. They just shrugged it off and said that they don't open even though they were open throughout the day.

Dear Patient,

I was very sorry to read of your experience in Ward 502. NHS Grampian staff aim to deliver a high standard of care in a person-centred manner. Sometimes there is a wait for pain killers to be dispensed. This might be because of competing demands or the need to have two nurses check certain drugs. However we would not want anyone to be in pain and responding to requests for pain killers in a timely manner is what we would always try to do.

The manner of dealing with your sickness does not sound kind or caring and even if the window could not be opened a fan could have been provided.

It is always our plea that patients bring any problems they have to the notice of the nurse in charge but we understand why some people feel unable to do this.

The vast majority of our staff are kind and caring but we need patents to tell us if this has not been their experience so thank you taking the time to post your story. You could help make things better by contacting us directly. I would be happy to chat over your experience with you. I can be contacted by email at loldroyd@nhs.net or by telephone on 01224 567900.

You r story will be brought to the attention of the Senior Charge Nurse in Ward 502.

Kind regards
