"Paediatric A&E treated us like casual visitors!"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

I have just left the A&E with my 3year old and vowed never to go back even if it means going private. I do not know how their triage system works, but how you can judge the seriousness of a child's condition by their ability to play with the toys in the waiting room beats me!

My child has had very high fever for 6days, uncontrolled by ibuprofen or paracetamol, been to the GP twice and was referred to the A&E paed after a phone conversation with the paed. On getting to A&E, sat for 2hours without been called. We were actually the only people at the reception and I was left feeling that I had let my son down for bringing him to people who had no intention of helping him at all. I was very upset, I had to leave the department. I will keep managing my son on antipyretics and will be reporting back to my GP that the so-called paeds weren't any help afterall. Such treatments shouldn't still be seen in a country like UK, not so much for hardworking taxpayers.

We are very sorry that we did not meet the standard that you expected when you visited. It can sometimes be difficult to understand why you are not being seen immediately when there are no other patients in the waiting room. It may be that there are other patients in the department that are receiving urgent treatment and we are sorry that this was not pointed out to you at the time. If you wish to speak to someone about this please contact the matron via our Patient Relation Team on 0118 322 8338 or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk.
