"Bad experience with sigmoidoscopy"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

Last week I had a sigmoidoscopy and was asked to fill in a form-part of which was a section asking if I wanted medication before the procedure which I ticked yes to. The reason being my muscles around the area tighten up with pain and this could be damaging. I was wheeled in and the medical professional doing the procedure explained that they had to do a small test. Before I knew it the medical professional started the procedure which was very painful as the scope was going in. I am now experiencing more problems since this and had to write this not just for me but for anyone having any procedure.

Listen to and respect what patients are telling you because they know their bodies better than you do.

We are sorry to hear that you had a bad experience when you attended for your flexible sigmoidoscopy. Whilst the majority of our patients do not request sedation for a flexible sigmoidoscopy this service is available and sedation should have been available to you. We would like to further investigate your experience to ensure that we can learn from it and we would be grateful if you are able to get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01932 723553.
