"Disgusted at the treatment of my mother"

About: Queen Marys Hospital (Sidcup)

I went with my 85 year old mother to her eye outpatient’s appointment today and I must say that I was very glad I had gone with her. We had to wait over 90 minutes to be see, which we accept because the department was very busy.

What I do not accept is the way in which the medical professionals (I use that word lightly) dealt with my mother.

They did not engage with her and hardly looked at her. They did not answer her questions properly or indeed help her to understand what would be the right way forward for her eye health. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with medical people who behave this way and it would have taken nothing for the Dr to have sat up in their chair, looked at my mother and actually engage with her. They sat hidden behind the eye testing machine and she had to try to pear around it to see him. If I wasn't such a good judge of people and if I wasn't able to interpret their meaning she would not have known what they were talking about. My mother is in excellent health both mentally and physically and I worry about patients who are not as able as my mother and attending appointments on their own being confronted with the treatment we received today. I deal with people on a daily basis, am an extremely busy person and regardless of this I would never treat my clients as we were treated today. Unfortunately I did not take the Dr or nurse’s name, lucky for them really because I would have actually put in a formal complaint because they do not deserve the jobs they have. There is absolutely no excuse for bad treatment and a lesson in how to talk to and engage with people is very much needed here.

This costs nothing. Respect is free

We are very sorry to hear that the care that your mother received in opthalmology at Queey Mary's was not satisfactory and I will ensure that your comments re sent onto the responsible manager.
