"Such a caring nurse"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Oral surgery

(as the patient),

I was referred to the Oral Surgery Department from my dentist as I am dental phobic. I needed numerous teeth out (MY fault entirely) and at my first appointment it was agreed I would have 2 sessions of intravenous sedation to allow me to relax to have the teeth out in 2 sessions.

Unfortunately the first session I can only describe as barbaric. I felt pain and was crying throughout yet they did not stop just kept telling me it was nearly done! I am sure another person would have been braver but I am who I am and this seemed pointless sedation as I was not at all relaxed and in fact fuelled my fear.

Along I go to my second session, trembling and holding my mums hand feeling like a child as by now my fear is even worse.

A really kind nurse (D) took me into a side room and calmed me down, explained why the previous situation may had happened and assured me she would be with me throughout the procedure. She instantly put me at ease. Off she went to talk to the dentist and then came and got me.

This was a much better experience. This dentist, with the help of D listened to my concerns and treated me with kid gloves like I shamefully need! I felt like I was "cared" for and D wouldn't let anything horrible happen. I trusted her with every good reason. Thanks so much for pulling back up what my first visit pulled down - my confidence!
