"elderly fathers stay in hospital, across..."

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

As a Registered Nurse myself, I must admit that I often find myself critical of other health professionals. However, I would like to express my warm appreciation and gratitude to all the nursing and medical staff that were involved in my fathers care. Each and everyone were helpful, kind and understanding. My father has dementia and I felt he was always treated with dignity and respect and involved in his care and decision making. All relatives were treated kindly, made to feel welcome and encouraged to ask questions and were given regular updates on care plans, without prompting.

Despite a long wait in the A/E department, which we were warned about prior to admission, dad and my sister and I were made comfortable in a side room, appropriate pressure relieving mattrass was provided and warm drinks offered throughout our wait. Transfer to medical admissions went smoothly and without incident and, again, all staff were welcoming. Finally, his stay on ward 52 was made as pleasant as possible and my dad often commented on how lovely the staff were. Dad was always encouraged and assisted with his personal hygiene and was able to maintain his dignity and his usual well dressed appearance. My family and I can not thank you all enough and I feel very proud to call your teams my NHS colleagues.

Dear Mrs Tate

Thank you for providing feedback on your father's recent admission to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

I am very pleased to hear that he had a positive experience and that you are happy with the care he received from ED and Ward 52.

The Trust is grateful for all feedback, positive or negative, as it means we can better understand what is important to our patients, and your very kind comments will be shared with the Matrons and Sisters to pass onto the staff on your behalf.

I know they will be encouraged and pleased by your positive comments.

Thank you for leaving your comments on NHS Choices.
