My friend has a learning difficulty and is deaf. They were admitted as an emergency and after a couple of days in critical care, they stayed in a ward for about a week. The "What Matters to Me Board" was never filled in and medical and nursing staff kept coming into the room, talking to my friend without realising that they could not understand what staff were saying. My friend's mum was there for a lot of the time and kept reminding staff to make a note of the deafness. My friend is able to lip-read and can also communicate by writing. Proper person centred care would have help a lot!
