"The support we had was fantastic"

About: Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Edinburgh) / Paediatric surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

We were introduced to the Cleft team at Royal Edinburgh Hospital for sick children after our daughter had a late diagnosis of full cleft of the soft palate age 3. 5 in another NHS region. Our daughter has had excellent care. We as parents were in shock and as our daughter was 3. 5 years at diagnosis time was a major factor in having surgery to improve her speech before she started school. Within a year her surgery was done and the cleft team continued to monitor and will do so until our daughter is 20. I cannot praise Dr Mehendale and her team enough. My daughter now has near perfect speech, continues to see Gillian the cleft team speech therapist. I would not have made it through those early days and the days after surgery without The cleft nurses. The support we have had is fantastic.

Response from Jeannette Morrison, Head of Patient Experience, NHS Lothian

Dear Cleftstrong,

Thank you so much for your sharing your experiences of the CLEFT Team at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) with your daughter. I was so pleased to read about the support and care that you have all received from everyone in the team at what must have been such a difficult time, especially in the early days when your daughter was first diagnosed.

I have passed your feeback onto the team at RHSC, who will, I am sure be delighted with your feedback.I am pleased to read that your daughter now has almost perfect speech and wish her well now that she has started school.

Thank you again for this lovely feedback.

Kind regards

Jeannette
