"Very poor care for my vulnerable elderly..."

About: Cumberland Infirmary

My Grandmother was admitted to the CIC as she was very unwell. She is vulnerable has dementia and other significant health problems. She was left in a soiled night dress for over 12 hours, she got no assistance in washing and dressing this was left to family. Family was not given updates about her health, care or treatment, made to feel like a nuisance. She had been informed she needed a CT and Echo scan both of which were not done. Family not informed of discharge which meant that she had to travel home over 35miles in her nightdress and slippers. Discharge notes incomplete and missing vital information so GP is unclear on diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan. Overall care is substandard and lacks dignity and respect.

I am very sorry that this has been your grandmother’s experience and we do need to know more about her care.

All of your comments are very disappointing to read and some are of great concern to me.

Your concerns do warrant further investigation but whilst your contact remains anonymous this is difficult to investigate.

Also, you have not stated the dates of her admission, or the ward that she was being cared on.

If you are unhappy with the care or treatment that she received you have the right to complain

I would suggest that, in the first instance, you contact PALS - Patient Advice and Liaison Service - so that we can look into your concerns.

They can be contacted on

• 01228 814008 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday,

• E-mail to PALSCIC@ncuh.nhs.uk

• Patient Advice & Liaison Service

Cumberland Infirmary

In the meantime your comments will be passed to the lead Matron and the Deputy Director of Nursing for review.

Best regards
