"Bowel Cancer Care"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

(as the patient),

I am writing to say thank you for the fabulous care I received during my recent battle with bowel cancer.

Whilst I was recuperating from my operation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) it came to my attention that I was part of a trial initiated by Mr Rao who had obtained sponsorship for 2 beds in the ICU to reduce the number of cancer operations being cancelled. It had been very successful and it was being looked into extending the trail for a further period.

Having just received the great news that my cancer has been removed fully and I am now clear of this horrendous disease I felt I had to express my support for the trial to be continued as it has undoubtedly saved my life and others need to be given the same opportunity.

Furthermore, we too often see people complaining about the treatment they have received from Pilgrim & Lincoln Hospitals and I would like to go on record expressing my whole-hearted support for the treatment I have received both pre, post op and ongoing care. This includes Mr Rao and his surgical team, Dr Sheehan and his radiotherapy and chemotherapy team and Sally Nightingale and her nursing team who ALL have helped me and my family get through this very difficult time.

Response from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust

Dear Thud1

For starters let me thank you for taking the time to provide these comments.

Such positive comments made by patients are morale boosting for the entire medical fraternity who come under a lot of scrutiny in spite of trying their best to provide high standard of care for their patients within the available resources.

At Pilgrim the success of the care that we provide is due to the cohesive working between the clinicians, nurses (specialist & ward based) and the managers.

The level I beds alluded to in your comments have helped us to reduce the number of cancellations of operations for patients with colorectal cancer. This initiative would not have been possible without the joint efforts and co-operation of the Colorectal, Anaesthetic & Intensive care teams, alongside excellent support from the managers.

Kindest regards

Mr Milind Rao
