"Birth 1.4.16"

About: St Mary's Hospital (Manchester)

Good morning,

Following the recent birth of my first son, I wanted to give you some feedback around my personal experience at St Mary's.

Jack arrived by c section on 1st April as he was completely breech and and ECV did not work. (But was horrible!!) I also tried everything I'd read in my Ina-May books about raising my legs to turn him naturally and anything else on google but it didn't work.

The team at St. Mary's were amazing. They took into account my birth plan, and gave me everything I wanted to make the birth as natural as possible- The midwife was fantastic in every way.

We got immediate skin on skin with some of the checks done on my chest, they put the Beatles on in theatre, they agreed to lower the screen so I could see baby come out (although I changed my mind about this during the section and they were super flexible). The only things they didn't agree to were dimming the lights as they wanted to see what they were doing, and they could not do a vaginal seeding as this is against procedure. I cannot praise them enough for how much they took my wishes on board and supported me to make the section as natural as possible. The midwife was amazing and latched baby Jack straight onto my breast and I think that's why breastfeeding has been pretty good so far, we were really impressed from start to finish, despite my disappointment at not having been able to have home birth as I'd really wanted.

On the surgical ward (64 I think) all of the staff bar none were fantastic. They supported me and my partner loads. Again a wonderful experience.

My only slight negativity was at being told I could go home on the Saturday afternoon, but there being no paediatric doctor available until the Sunday afternoon to do the checks on Jack to enable us to leave- this was not anyone's fault though, and it believe just down to all of the doctors being super busy.

So my feedback is all positive, especially to the midwife on the day and the staff of the ward. I've been telling everyone how wonderful my experience was at St Mary's, and if we are lucky enough to ever have another child I hope to have it at St Mary's again.

Kind regards,

Susan Gallon

Thank you for your positive comments posted on the NHS Choices / Patient Opinion website regarding your care on Ward 64 and the post natal ward here at Saint Mary’s Hospital. It was very kind of you to take the time to write and compliment the staff as it is good to receive positive feedback which reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff. It was reassuring to read that you felt the midwives had listened to you and taken your carefully thought out plans and adapted them to the changing circumstances you found yourself in. I can assure you that we have passed on your thoughts to Mrs Julie Hempstock, Lead Midwife for Intrapartum and the staff involved. I have noted that you and your partner had to wait a long time for your baby checks to be completed and I apologise for this. I can tell you that we are looking at the delays in the postnatal baby checks and looking into how we can improve the service and I will ensure that your experience is shared directly with the team involved so that your feedback can help to inform the changes we need to make.
