"Nothing. I was on B3 which was ..."

About: Stepping Hill Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Nothing. I was on B3 which was dirty and the nurse that was on duty was rude to patients and to their staff. I was admitted for emergency surgery in the morning by my GP and had to discharged myself at 6.30 p.m. because they did not have anyone available to see me. I was advised to go to A&E in the morning when it would be quieter and a somebody would be able to see me then. Nurses assumed I was in for a major operation even though the senior consultant didn't even get to see me. Another nurse who checked me in was incompetent and could not even speak English properly. Chewing gum next to bed, blood on floor, fluff, tin foil on floor, a general dirty ward. No privacy offered and I was totally ignored for the 6.5 hours I spent there until I discharged myself. One nurse was excellent though. They kept trying to find a doctor to access me, although in the end all failed as they were all too busy. I left the ward in the same agony I came in with but could not stand to wait anymore as they told me there was no guarantee to see anyone.

What could be improved

Everything - see above !!!!

Anything else?

One nurse was excellent - top marks. A nurse on this day was disgusting to the patients - giving them all dirty looks, shouting rude comments at the nurses and making as much noise as possible to make themself seen. I have never ever come across a character like this in all my life and especially not in a hospital. The member of staff that served the food was excellent.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to submit your comments on your experience at Stepping Hill Hospital. We are disappointed to learn that overall your perception of your experience was negative.

Your comments have been brought to the attention of relevant managerial and nursing staff to ensure that, where appropriate, improvements can be made.

The Trust routinely obtains patient feedback on the services it provides and patients regularly comment on the excellent rapport and respect given to them by all staff on this ward. The Charge Nurse, who is one of this Trust’s “1st Class Leaders”, is also well respected by patients, staff and clinicians.

Thank you for your kind comments about one member of the nursing staff on the ward which I can confirm they have been made aware of.

As previously stated, we are sorry to learn that overall your experience was not as positive as we would hope. Please do get in touch with our Patient and Customer Services Department if you would like to discuss this in further detail. They can be contacted at pcs@stockport.nhs.uk , or telephone: 0161 419 5678

Yours faithfully
