"The fact that the room where my ..."

About: King's Mill Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The fact that the room where my granddad was staying was clean and quiet. Some of the nurses that were caring for him were very nice and helped when asked.

What could be improved

The way in which we were told about his condition. Basically my mum had been trying to see a consultant about her dad's condition and she was fobbed off for a few days with the fact that the consultant was busy doing rounds - funnily enough their rounds never made it to his room when anyone who wanted answers was there - if at all! When we did manage to catch the consultant on their rounds a few days later all they could say (in the hallway of the ward with people milling about) was that there was nothing that could be done for him. We weren't taken into a private area, we didn't have the news broken to us gently - it was just a case of he's dying and that is pretty much it. If we were told this information earlier we could have had more time with him at home doing what he wanted to do in his final days.

Anything else?

The language barrier can sometimes cause a bit of a problem at this hospital. I was once asked if I had sisters when the question that was meant to be asked was did I have Cystitis. A nurse in the room had to clarify a number of questions that were asked - not something that you want when you are panicking about your health!
