"Poor obstetric experience at Altnagelvin, Northern Ireland"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I recently had a beautiful baby boy 5 months ago at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry. As this was my 1st child I was clueless to what was going to happen. Throughout giving birth the midwife continued to call me by the wrong name even though my partner reminded her well over 25 times what my name was. I mean how are you meant to focus when someone isnt even calling you by the right name?

Secondly, before I went in to deliver I advised numerous staff that my body rejects dissolvable stitches and for reference not to use them. Once my son was born they started to stitch. I advised them again not to use dissolvable stitches and yet they continued to do so. I stayed 24 hours in the hospital and requested to go home as No one had been in to check on me or my son. I was not shown how to change a diaper or breastfeed. Apparently Im just meant to know.

About 2 weeks later a midwife came out to my house and checked on my stitches. As they were not healing she had to cut them out in my very own home! Nothing more was done and now I am left unhealed and thats it.. their job is done. I have to live with this because they refused to listen to me..the patient! I now am mentally scarred an will never have another child because of this incident and will never go back to Altnagelvin. Is this what we are supposed to expect out of a hospital? A place that is meant to take care of you?
