"Transrectal Ultrasound and Biopsy"

About: Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust

I am surprised there are no other reviews of this excellent procedure and am happy to provide a five star rating. Within the two-week window of referral by my doctor, I arrived understandably apprehensive, but armed with the careful notes sent in advance. A short interview with a nurse established why I was there and what was expected of me. There was the expected delay while an antibiotic took effect, but I was shown into the biopsy room not very much later than my appointment. The senior specialist nurse welcomed me and conducted the whole experience keeping me informed about every detail as we went along. The doctor, likewise, discussed why I was there and what the alternatives could be - to wait and see, or to have a biopsy taken. I chose the latter and with full guidance and commentary went through the biopsy procedure.

With a local anesthetic, the whole procedure was virtually painless and not even uncomfortable. I was shown the ultrasound scan afterwards and after a short time I was dressed again and ready to go home.

The attention to detail and full explanation was remarkable. Some repetition was inevitable and probably essential to ram home the importance of the avoidance by infections afterwards. The antibiotics and what do do in the days after were also carefully explained. The nurse booked me in for a results appointment there and then, and checking I was able to pass water, allowed me to leave.

I have to say that my biggest worry was where to park. After a 25 mile journey to find a long queue waiting for the car park and every road parking space for miles around taken up, I was seriously concerned. I found a two-hour space not too far away eventually which I shall not reveal. This issue is a major headache and must be so for the management. However, the Hospital is, and always has been in my experience, a caring and efficient place. My grateful thanks.
