"Gastro follow up waiting times are unacceptable"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut)

(as the patient),

I moved to Aberdeen last year and was referred to ARI . I seen the Reg in February was then referred for and urgent scope and MRI as I had been having some symptoms of active crohns, I then went to see my GP 3 and 4 weeks after my scope and there were no results. I was lucky that I got a cancellation for my MRI scan and got about a week early and for that I am thankful. However a month on from having the scan I received nothing about a follow up after these tests. I called to find out what was happening to be told it was a 6 month follow up and they were 6 months behind and it would be February next year before I would be seen, It has made question the point in urgent referrals and also them saying we may have to put you back on to medication when by the time my appointment comes round the scan and scope results may be completely useless. I has taken me quite a while for me to get my head around having to go back on medication and also going to through the hell that is a colonoscopy. I also went through the stress and upset of wondering just how bad things are before they are urgent referrals. Yes I can go through my GP if there is a problem but that is then more time and and even longer wait having to wait to see a GP.

Dear Crohnie25,

I can understand how frustrated you must feel about this situation. As an organisation we do understand how stressful waiting for test results is for patients. I am very sorry that you have had to cope with this stress on top of dealing with the stress of your illness. I do not know this service well but if you are willing to contact me and share your details I would be most happy to have someone look into why this has happened to you. I agree with your point wholeheartedly in terms of test result being out of date by the time you see the specialist again. I assume however that if anything was wrong, that needed immediate intervention, someone would be in touch with you.

Thank you for posting your feedback. Please get in touch and we can look into how we can help you in a more timely manner.

I can be contacted by email at loldroyd@nhs.net or by telephone on 01343 567900

Kind regards,
