"Poor discharge system"

About: Bristol Royal Infirmary

I am writing on behalf of my daughter. She recently had her gall bladder removed that had complications, needed surgery on the following day and had drains put in situ. The care on the recovery unit wqs excellent. Then the ward she was on was quite good though it has to be said some nurses better than others. But the discharge plan was non-existent. Living as we do 2 hours down the M5 and only able to park at the BRI for 15mins we had hoped for a little more co-operation from the ward staff re: the timing of the discharge. We were given less than a minute. The waiting room is dreadful, a cold open area between the entrance and the coffee shop, so my daughter had to wait 2hours on a hard seat in this cold space wearing her P.J's and my jacket! And still in some discomfort with the large, unhealed surgical wound. The wound had not been seen by a tissue viability nurse (it was supposed to) and the wound was inadequately dressed. 2 days later my daughter was admitted to our local hospital with very serious infections. Not happy.
