"An unhelpful visit from the IRIS team"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Mental Health Services for Older People – Inpatient

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

(Sharing this story on behalf of a visitor to the Deaf Society event in Nottingham in May)

My mum is showing signs of dementia, but as a former teacher she is able to mask many of her symptoms by being proficient in some of the diagnostic tests e. g. drawing a clock, using maths.

We had the IRIS team visit, and I hoped they would be able to help us. They asked us what help we wanted, but at this early stage we found it difficult to express exactly what help would be useful to us. It would have been far more useful for the service to provide us with details of what the service could do for us, or examples of what they did for other families.

The other issue was that I didn't feel comfortable talking about my mum and her deteriorating health in her presence. It would have been helpful for me to have some time to talk to the IRIS team alone, so that I could explain the issues from my perspective.

The team left without agreeing any support for my mum. I would really appreciate a second visit where the team could perhaps give us a profile of the support they could offer so that we could consider what would be most helpful.

Good morning, I am really sorry to read that you have had an unhelpful experience with a visit from an IRIS team. If you would like to discuss this further I would be very happy to do so. As there are 7 different IRIS and MHIR teams in the city and county it would be really useful to know exctly which team was involved, this will help us to make sure that the details of the complaint can be adressed by the right person.

I am very happy to be contacted on 01623 785412, if the IRIS team is involved is the one I manage I will be able to answer any queries directly, if not then I can forward the information on to whichever of the other IRIS teams are invovled.

with kind regards
Tony Wilde, Team Leader, Mansfield and Ashfield IRIS team.

Hi Tony,

Your response is much appreciated.

I have emailed a link to this response to the person I spoke with at the event, and I have encouraged them to contact you to discuss what further support could be provided for their family.

I am sure they will contact you, and will be very grateful for your help.

Thanks, Amy
