"The Smoking Policy"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

My daughter has just spent 7 days in the maternity wards of Pinderfields hospital. This resulted in my husband and I visiting 15 times over that period. EVERY time we approached the entrance doors we were disgusted and shocked at the patients ,who stood blatantly ignoring the No Smoking signs, puffing away .

My daughter's ward was situated directly above this area and she was unable to open the window due to the smell of cigarettes.

What is the management of Pinderfields doing about this?

We have installed a smoking shelter away from the main entrance for patients/visitors, and our staff encourage smokers to use the facility. The security team also challenge those who smoke by the entrance. Current legislation prohibits smoking only in enclosed areas, however, and we have no recourse legally to force the public to comply. We are reliant on their cooperation and goodwill to a large degree.
