"Fabulous care in the ICU"

About: Victoria Hospital (Kirkcaldy)

(as a relative),

A year ago this weekend my Dad was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in the Victoria Infirmary following a devastating heart attack. There then followed 3 days before his ventilator was switched off. During this time he received excellent care from the wonderful staff. In addition to caring for Dad the staff all had time and patience to ensure that his very large family were cared for and supported during what was a very testing period.

The staff even allowed my daughter the opportunity to say goodbye by playing her harp once more for her Grandpa, a love they both shared. Thank you for leaving us with good memories despite the circumstances.

Dear Jopo

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your dad's experience and the impact his care had on your family. Losing a loved one and adjusting to life without them is hard and key dates/times can be challenging, as they tend to make you reflect on times gone by. I am glad that your memories around that time are good, despite the circumstances.

In health care we talk about providing person centred care and often struggle to articulate what that really means. You have just given the perfect example by sharing with us the example of your daughter playing her harp for her Grandpa. Clearly this was something that mattered hugely to them both and it is great to hear that staff facilitated the opportunity for that final memory.

Your story has heartened me today and reminded me of just how important it is for staff to find out what matters to patients and their families.

Many thanks for sharing,I will make sure your post is widely shared.

Regards

Louise Ewing
