"Care in A&E at Edinburgh RIE"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My elderly mum was admitted to A&E this afternoon; care from junior doctor exemplary, mindful of her dementia, kind, thoughtful and caring. He listened to our views on proposed treatment and ensured he included mum in the discussion.

The nursing staff were efficient but felt could have been more understanding of her dementia, refused to allow me to go with her and when I asked found she had been moved to immediate care and was on her own.

Whilst we appreciate the unit was busy and it took 150 minutes to see the doctor, it would have been helpful had the nursing team kept us updated.

Dear AG24

Thank you for sharing your experiences about the care your mother experienced whilst at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. I was pleased to read how caring and mindful the junior doctor was with you and your mum. I am sorry to hear about the length of time it took for your mum to see the doctor and you should have been kept up to date by the nursing staff.

I have passed your feedback onto the senior nursing staff at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and agree that you should have been able to be with your mum when she was transfered to the immediate care area so that she was not on her own as this can be a distressing and anxious time especially for people who have dementia.

Thank you for sharing this feedback and once again please accept my apologies for this.

Kind regards

Jeannette
