"MRI scans at East Surrey Hospital"

About: East Surrey Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

Between August 2014 and July 2015 I had five MRS scans of my lumbar spine. four of them with contrast at East Surrey Hospital

I found the staff dealing with me very kind and considerate. The grinding noise of the machine the first time I went in was horrifying and horrendous and the sound of the nutcracker suite on the headphones was useless. Not a nice experience, but necessary given how ill I was.

On the second scan I was offered a choice of music and preferred loud rock music.

By the time of the third scan as an out patient I was quite blasé about the whole affair and wore both ear plugs and headphones.

I was also constantly advised over the head phones how long each part of the scan took, although the first time I was not told it was in two parts

I have to say that the staff in this unit were the best I came across, after two months residence in the hospital. Indeed they were the only part of the hospital that I experienced where they seemed to know what they were doing.

I was also impressed to find as an outpatient that they were the only department which worked on Sundays. more staff should follow their example..

I also think that one of the ladies who treated me so well in the MRI department deserves a Gold Medal for her treatment of me in that department.

Dear seand

Thank you for sharing you story about your MRI scans, I will pass on your appreciation to the staff in that department. You may be interested to hear that we have recently ordered new headphones that should help to both protect patients from the noise of the scanner and provide better sound quality.

Kind regards,
