"The environment of the new treatment ..."

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

(as the patient),

What I liked

The environment of the new treatment centre is very pleasing and the toilets clean. The clinic areas behind the Gateways are cramped and do NOT adher with singel sex regualtions.

What could be improved

Arrived 8.30am as requsted for a procedure booked to commence at 8.45am. Was consented, asked to fully undress and put on typical "back to the world gown" and to then sit and wait on an open corridor sitting alongside men in similar guise (so much for single sex regulations!). I was on the corridor from about 8.50am. After waiting there for 35 minutes feeling increasingly anxious/ embarrassed, listening to both the love life and television habits of the arrayed clinical staff who appeared to have nothing better to do, a nurse came over to me to ask if I was Alfred and then actually looked at me and said, "oh no of course you are not Alfred", I asked them why I was waiting so long (by then an hour had elapsed since I had arrived at the hopsital at the time I was asked to arrive). They went away and came back to confirm that yes I had been booked for an 8.45am procedure but that the consultant who was doing it never arrived at the endoscopy unit until after 10am. I said why if that was the case was I consented and asked to undress to sit in what to all intent and purposes was a public mixed sex area for over an hour. They advised that the doctors liked patients to be ready for them when they arrived. Outrageous - so much for patient dignity, respect and experience. I was advised this was a frequent occurence.

I got redressed and went out of the day theatre area to calm down and write my complaint letter and suggested they bleep me when indeed the consultant did arrive - this was some 1 hour 30 mins after I was booked in!

Anything else?

I would not be happy to go back to this hospital if this is typical of the standrad of patioent care.
