"No nutrition for a week!"

About: Alexandra Hospital

My 53 year old Husband admitted to this hospital a week today with difficulty swallowing and choking on certain foods. He has been Nil by Mouth since admission. A SALT assessment and nasendoscope confirmed that when he takes any liquids they are 'pooling' and does not have a safe swallow.

Since last Wednesday he has lost 8kgs in weight! Admission weight 93kgs now 85.1 kegs. He only saw a dietician on Monday 5 days after admission! He has not had any nutrtion at all, two attempts have been made to pass a NG tube but have been unsuccessful, we were told he would be having TPN feed instead. Despite being told this and a week today my husband has still not had his nutritional needs met by the health care professionals in this trust! We were told on Monday he needs neurology review. He was told yesterday this will be on Friday. Why does it take 5 days to be reviewed by neurologists when there are neurology Drs in this trust. Last Friday we were told he needed MRI and CT scan. Nothing happens the weekend and these were done on Monday. I want to point out that the nursing staff are wonderful and have escalated their concerns regarding his weight loss etc. The issues here lie solely with the Doctors in this trust. Lack of communication and poor acknowledgement of our concerns, means we are fast losing faith in them and this hospital. Why is there no PALS sited at this trust!

Thank you for your comments and for raising your concerns.

I have passed your concerns to the area that I believe they relate to but it would be helpful to discuss in more detail with you and therefore I would appreciate it if you could contact our PALS Officer by phone on 0300 123 1732 or by email on wah-tr.PET@nhs.net our generic email. Our PALS Officer is located centrally but covers all sites. Alternatively please contact me on 01905 760783 our number.

I look forward to hearing from you and am sorry that we have given you cause to have such concerns about your husband’s treatment.

Kind Regards

Tessa Mitchell

Associate Director of Patient Experience
