I was admitted to the Newberry Centre in Middlesbrough, after being sectioned by the police, and I was there for a month. After an assessment by 2 psychiatrists and a AMHP they decided I needed to be in hospital for my own safety, so I agreed to go informally. When I first got there, I was terrified because I didn't know any of the staff or patients. However, once I got to know the patients and staff, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. I had the best key nurse I could have ever asked for, and she really helped me to believe in myself. She was never angry with me if I'd slipped up, only reassuring that it was okay, and relapse doesn't define recovery.
The staff at the Newberry Centre really helped me to turn my life around. The HCA's, nurses, kitchen staff, domestics, teachers etc, were fab. There was always someone to talk to if you needed them. Being in hospital made me realise that I'm not alone, and I got a diagnosis which allowed me to move forwards with my life.
