"The staff and doctors of the outpatients ..."

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

(as the patient),

What I liked

The staff and doctors of the outpatients department have mainly been very kind and caring. I liked the online booking system for my initial appointment.

What could be improved

The hospital while clean is in desperate need of a face lift. The outpatients departments booking system is also very frustrating after the initial appointment.

Anything else?

While having a CT of my sinuses i was called in by the nurse and strapped down to the CT scanner. At this point the nurse left. I am a vet and knew what to expect, but the thought of being strapped to a bed with no explanation of what they were going to do or why was horrifying. If this had been another person they might have been petrified of what was going on. Procedures need to be explained to patients, you can't expect us to know whats going on.

Thanks for your comments, which we will take on board.

The facelift for the QEII, especially its outpatients department is on its way. Within a couple of years, a brand new local general hospital will be built on the site - a project that is being led by our local primary care trust. This £30 million development will include brand new outpatients and diagnostics services and is planned to be in place by 2013. In the meantime, we will do our best to keep the current unit presentable.

You should also be glad to hear that we're overhauling our outpatient appointments system in recognition of the frustration that you and others have - especially in making changes to booked appointments. Soon we will have an online service on our website, which will allow everyone to submit queries and/or requests about their forthcoming appointment. This should also free up our contact centre staff to deal more effectively with those who choose to call us by phone.

Finally, you're right about your CT experience. We're happy to feedback your comments to our radiology colleagues.
